  1. Thank you for your interest in Project Hermes and in receiving U. S.
  2. Supreme Court opinions electronically.
  3.  
  4. The U.S.  Supreme Court opinions are immediately available from Case
  5. Western Reserve University via "anonymous" ftp over the Internet from
  6. host "FTP.CWRU.Edu".  The files relating to the opinions are located
  7. in the directory "hermes".
  8.  
  9. This directory contains several readme files and three subdirectories:
  10. ascii, atex, and xywrite.  The "atex" subdirectory contains the files as
  11. directly received from the U.S. Supreme Court in the Atex 8000
  12. Document Processing and Typesetting system format.  These files
  13. contain 8-bit typesetting codes and are extremely difficult to read on
  14. a typical display.  Those wishing to copy the Atex files should make
  15. sure that they set "image" mode in FTP. (those using the archive server
  16. need not worry about this)

  18. The xywrite directory contains the same files with the Atex codes striped
  19. out or (where possible) converted into xywrite commands.  Xywrite is a
  20. PC based word processor simmilar to Atex.  These files will display the
  21. text (almost) as it was writen by the Supreme Court.  These files should
  22. also be copied in "image" mode in FTP.

  24. The "ascii" subdirectory contains the same files as processed by a
  25. locally developed filtering program designed to remove the typesetting
  26. codes while retaining as much of the "look" of the document as
  27. possible.  These files are in plain ASCII text.

  29. Each opinion consists of an optional syllabus, the opinion and
  30. optionally concurring and dissenting opinions.  Each is contained in a
  31. separate file. A syllabus is associated with most of the opinions and
  32. summarizes the ruling. The files are named as they are received from
  33. the Court. Filtered files have the extension ".filt" appended to the
  34. end of the name.

  36. The filter program, which removes the typesetting codes, moves
  37. footnotes to the end of the document separated with a dashed line.
  38. Footnote references are enclosed in curly brackets "{ }".  Users are
  39. also warned that most of the features of the typeset document, such as
  40. bolding, italicizing, use of fonts, and other similar characteristics
  41. are lost in the translation to ASCII.  The resulting filtered
  42. documents, however, are quite readable on most displays.
